Description

Crude Iodine refers to semi-refined or technical-grade iodine in crystalline form, extracted primarily from natural brines, seaweed ash, or Chilean caliche. This form of iodine retains trace impurities but is suitable for industrial processes, chemical synthesis, pharmaceutical precursors, and iodine compound production.

It appears as dark violet to metallic-gray crystalline solids with a pungent iodine odor. Crude iodine is widely used in the manufacture of potassium iodide (KI), iodophors, iodine-based disinfectants, and organic iodine derivatives. It also serves as a base material in halogen chemistry, X-ray contrast media, and photographic chemicals.

Production Method

Iodine Extraction from Natural Sources

  • Chilean caliche ore (primary global source): Iodate-rich ores are leached, reduced, and the iodine is precipitated and distilled.

  • Brine processing: From natural gas brines or seawater, iodine is extracted using oxidation and air-stripping methods.

  • The crude iodine is then sublimed and crystallized, though it retains minor halogen or moisture impurities until further refining.
